so, the RIAA have gone and DMCA’d youtube-dl out of existance.. for now.. youtube-dl dows not break drm, or download protected videos. you can only get what you can watch through the web interface without signing in.

this is a problem, since i archive a few chanels that have a risk of being shut down due to “the algorithm” not being fed correctly.

eventually the working copy i have will die, due to changes in the youtube website.

then, my favourite channels will have no defense against arbitary shutdown by youtube. I don’t publically redistribute, so i’m not stealing ad revinue. I just providing an involuntary backup as I believe that it is better for rogue archivists to preserve culture, especially when it is housed on a platform outside the control of the creator.
